| Improper bite or malocclusion, a
contributing factor
of TMD or temporomandibular joint disorder, can also be appropriately resolved by way of
neuromuscular
orthodontic treatment.
Neuromuscular orthodontics is a special field in dentistry that tries to provide understanding and treatment for malocclusion caused by the irregularity of teeth alignment or changes in the alignment of the jaws and its related structures.
Neuromuscular orthodontics in the form of TMD treatment aims to realign the jaw joints, facial bones, tissues and teeth. This then stops progression of
TMD, allows for healing and
symptoms are
reduced or eliminated
.
The most common
neuromuscular
orthodontic treatment for TMD is
to start with an orthotic appliance and then progress to
the fixed multi-bracket therapy, a.k.a. Dental Braces.
These are
made either of steel,
the
more common option, or ceramic, for aesthetic purposes.
Once Braces are removed, treatment will be complemented by the use of retainers, which basically continue the process of correcting occlusion for better dental appearance and occlusion. This also helps in the restructuring of the formation of the bones surrounding the teeth.
There are 2 types of retainers, either removable or fixed. The removable retainer is a clear plastic that fits snugly over the teeth. The fixed retainers are a small wire strand that is hidden behind the front teeth. Retainers are worn/maintained for long term stability.
For patients with severe temporomandibular dysfunction, a plastic TMJ appliance may be worn along with the routine orthodontics.
