So what is Neuromuscular Dentistry?
Neuromuscular Dentistry is a field in Dentistry that
takes into consideration
the various structures that affect proper Occlusion. These structures include the muscles
of the head, neck and jaws
, the teeth and the temporomandibular joints, otherwise known as TMJ.
While most Dentistry is limited to its one dimension - the study of the teeth, Neuromuscular Dentistry tries to encompass the other two dimensions - the temporomandibular joints or TMJ's and the underlying and surrounding muscles. This field allows for the appropriate treatment of symptoms not normally encountered in a typical dental practice.
Patients with misaligned jaw are oftentimes suffering from TMD or Temporomandibular Joint Disorder which can develop symptoms like jaw pain, shoulder and neck pain, frequent headaches,
ringing in the ears (
tinnitus)
, dizziness (vertigo) and clicking /popping
sounds in the joints of the jaw. Simply put, this syndrome affects the relationship of the skull and the jaws often
caused
by Malocclusion or a bad bite.
The goal of Neuromuscular treatment then is to realign the jaw to eliminate the painful symptoms and correct the bite. People who have undergone Neuromuscular Dentistry treatments benefit not only from relief from these inconvenient symptoms but an improved quality of life and overall well-being.
The sad truth is, many patients suffering from
TMD
are either misdiagnosed or undiagnosed, thus failing to receive proper care. If you believe this condition may be affecting you, we highly recommend that you call today and arrange a complimentary consultation with Dr. Parrag.
